Breaking Barriers Teaching Pack (T3)

Information

The Numicon Breaking Barriers Teaching Pack comprises a Teaching Handbook and an Assessment and Photocopy Masters book for teachers of children who experience particular difficulties learning maths. The pack provides step-by-step activities and practice, with planning support and assessment, alongside expert advice. The apparatus is sold separately.  See Apparatus Packs

Breaking Barriers replaces Closing the Gap. The concepts covered are the same as Closing the Gap with extra content from Numicon 1 and 2. This is a welcome extension to CTG!

The activities are designed both for children with Special Education Needs and Learning Disabilities and for children who have fallen significantly behind in their mathematics learning.

Both these groups of children are likely to be working in small groups (2-4) or in a one-to-one situation.  Research shows that a combination of approaches is successful. Withdrawal from a classroom setting is only recommended where the learning needs of the child require a quiet and non-distracting environment.

Numicon is designed to support all children in their learning. It is important that there is no perception within the class that Numicon is used by children of 'lower ability' or when a learner is 'stuck'. This would potentially stigmatize Numicon's use rather than being a valuable learnign tool for all. It is important to give all children in the class experience of using Numicon to enhance their own learning.
