  • Come and learn how to get started with Numicon in PHASES 1 - 3. This free face-to face session is an overview of how to use manipulatives and how to follow the early lessons. Please bring your Numicon Shapes if you have them. Some shapes will be available for use in this session. Bring your laptop to work with Numicon Online. BYO afternoon tea and drink.

This course will be based on Numicon Breaking Barriers and NIP (Phase 2). You will learn how to use this programme and use equipment that encourages discovery, understanding and application of maths in everyday life. You will increase your own knowledge of mathematics.   • Catherine and Anita will present this full-day course introducing Numicon Big Ideas Programme for Secondary, Intermediate and Primary Teachers, SENCOs, LSCs, RTLBs and Support Staff. Big Ideas is a 12 week programme that takes the key mathematical ideas from the second part of Phase 2 and presents them in ways that are visible and accessible to all learners. It is usually taught to small groups of 4 students. The programme uses research about how to best support learners who have missed out on key concepts, enabling them to rejoin the class upon completion. The day will include: practical work, some theory and a chance to try the lessons and ask questions. Morning tea will be supplied. Bring your own lunch. *please note - there is another course running in Rotorua the day before this one. It is aimed at Tier 3 students. Why not attend both? There are 2 course options.   • This half-day course for Phase 1 teachers is designed to introduce how the Numicon pedagogy supports the NZ curriculum. We will practise using the Numicon equipment to represent mathematical ideas and promote explaining and justifying. We will look through the planning materials for Year 1, 2 and 3 (Firm Foundations- Numicon 2) to find the development of key mathematical knowledge through the step-by-step, explicit teaching steps. We will discuss how to adapt your teaching to meet the needs of all your learners through the use of formative assessment using the Numicon milestones.
